Day trip from Colico to Milan

How to get there?

From Colico you can take the substitute bus or train to Lecco. From here you can then continue by train to Milan Central Station. If you want to reach the centre (Milan Cathedral) you will need to use the subway.

After leaving the station you will find yourself directly in front of the Duomo di Milano, which you can visit and reach the panoramic terraces located at the highest part of the cathedral to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. The ticket costs €11.

Located in Piazza Duomo you will also find the Museo del Novecento, which can be visited for €5. Inside you can admire 20th century Italian art, especially Futurism, Abstractionism and Spatialism and on the top floor you will find a room with a spectacular view of the Duomo.

Next, we recommend to visit the Galleria di Vittorio Emanuele II,  where you will find the shop windows of the finest boutiques and historic cafés; and if you lower your gaze to the floor mosaics, you will find a bull, emblem of the city of Turin and if you are looking for a bit of luck, according to legend you will have to turn on it three times with your right heel.

Continuing along the gallery you will reach the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where since 1778 you can enjoy dance performances and symphony concerts by the greatest composers and conductors in history, or you can visit the theatre museum with guided tours at reduced prices for families.

What should I visit?

  • Castello Sforzesco: Situated in Piazza Castello 3 and can be visited with a €5 ticket, it offers free accessible courtyards ideal for a walk outside the walls, inside it houses several museums in one. The picture gallery, the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Musical Instruments and you cannot miss the Pietà Rondanini Michelangelo’s last unfinished work. https://www.milanocastello.it/
  • Parco Sempione: a public park located 5 minutes away from the Sforzesco castle, ideal if you are looking for a corner of nature and relaxation in which you can take walks and enjoy peace and quiet.
  • Navigli: one of Milan’s most iconic districts famous for its historic canals and unique atmosphere. Originally built for commercial and transport purposes, today the Navigli are a place where art, history and entertainment meet. We recommend strolling along the Naviglo Granede and Naviglio Pavese canals, admiring the boats and small bridges, and discovering independent boutiques, art galleries and vintage markets (every last Sunday of the month).
  • Pinacoteca di Brera: located in the heart of the Brera district, the Pinacoteca di Brera is one of the most prestigious ancient and modern art galleries in Milan.   • Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio: one of the oldest churches in Milan, dedicated to its patron saint St Ambrose. free entrance.
  • Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie: is a UNESCO heritage site and it hosts Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous painting named Ultima cena . Free entrance.

Where can I find typical sweets?

  • Dolci memela: head to Via Marghera if you’re looking for a delicius breakfast of brioches and homemade pastries.
  • Ciacco gelateria: one of the best ice cream shops in Milan, it offers homemade ice cream at excellent prices, in the Duomo area Via Spadari 13.

How do I get back to Colico?

To get back to Colico, you need to use the subway to get to Milan’s central station and then take a train to Lecco, followed by a replacement bus or train to get to Colico.
