The Pian di Spagna Natural Reserve, the largest in Lombardy, is a paradise for lovers of fauna and flora and for photography enthusiasts.
The reserve extends from Lake Mezzola, in Valchiavenna, to Colico.
Its name comes from the Spanish domination which lasted here until 1726.
The reserve was created in 1985 with the aim of preserving the unique characteristics of this marshy environment where numerous varieties of migratory fauna live, which seasonally moves from Africa to central Europe. Animals such as mute swan, gray heron and mallard find their ideal habitat here. Some very interesting plant forms, such as yellow and white nymph, marsh reed, sedge and aquatic iris, increase the charm of this reserve.
The electric boat tour starts from the Colico pier. After reaching the mouth of the Adda river, navigation continues along the Mera river, between marshes, reeds, rocks overlooking the lake and small villages. The final stop, before returning to Colico, is the Tempietto di S. Fedelino, one of the most precious artifacts of Romanesque art in Lombardy. A small temple that in over a thousand years has never undergone any transformation.
